Hearts and Rockets’ new EP TV Is Boring is out now on cassette and on all digital streaming services. This week they release ‘Buy It’ – the 3rd single from the EP – alongside a killer new video clip (available for airplay and sharing now).

Following from their recent singles ‘Square Eyes’ and ‘On/Off’, Naarm (Melbourne)-based bratwave duo Hearts and Rockets’ EP, TV is Boring, is available now via their Bandcamp page and psychichysteria.com, on cassette and on all digital and streaming services.

Buy It’ is a dig at the ease at which we let products and ads filter into our brains and our every day lives. Influenced by TV ads all claiming to have the next best thing, ‘Buy It’ is a super-liminal message to hand your money over and give in to the TV.

Recent single ‘On/Off’ references a bunch of Hearts and Rockets' favourite shows directly (including the X-Files, of course). It's a back and forth between the duo about the two sides of screentime: the comfort of TV and the distraction it creates.

This EP has received support from community radio across Australia, as well as spins on triple j, Double J, WFMU and more. The video for ‘Square Eyes’ was featured four times over the weekend of its release on iconic video clip program rage, and ‘Buy It’ premiered on rage Friday May 13.

TV Is Boring follows four singles from the band last year, including the double a-side 7” Dead As Disco / Workout, as well as breakthrough single ‘Milk Bar’, and the post-punk ripper ‘You Don’t Know What You Have Until You’ve Had Enough’ which featured on a split 7” with their mates Zig Zag.

While working on songs for album #3 (due out early 2023), Kalindy and Kurt found themselves with a surplus of catchy tracks. They pulled out four originals that were referencing the omnipresent flicker of TV screens and recorded them in their home studio for this special limited-edition cassette release.

Because they love having fun, they’ve also recorded a cheeky ‘secret track’, which is a cover of a classic punk anthem… Black Flag’s ‘TV Party’.

The EP has been mixed and mastered by their long-time collaborator Mikey Young, and sounds crisp, nostalgic and fresh all at once. With their trademark delay-laden vocals, driving bass lines, post-punk guitar and poppy synth all present, this EP also signals a new direction for the band. Still always finding the perfect balance of having fun and taking what they do super seriously, on TV Is Boring Kalindy and Kurt refine their craft.

Please share tracks from the EP everywhere now, and we’d love it if you would share the video clip for ‘Buy It’ which you can find here: https://youtu.be/HL_lEO0mdjU

Kalindy and Kurt (me) are both keen to do interviews, so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’d like to have a chat.

Thanks so much in advance,
Kurt Eckardt

Some press for Hearts and Rockets:

It’s snarky synths, it’s chunky bass, sometimes it’s Donna Summer disco and it’s always very, very bratty.”
- The Music, The 25 Rising Local Acts You Need To Know About In 2021 (February 5, 2021)

“Scuzzy bass, riot grrrl vocals, and a hook about Passiona – what’s not to love?”
- The Guardian Best New Music, July 2020

“An urgent and irresistible skeleton dance banger.”
- Steph Hughes, triple j

“Bold synths, a punk attitude, disco pop aesthetics and a lot of energy are the main ingredients which make Dead As Disco…”
-
ZR, Destroy//Exist

“Hearts and Rockets don’t dare to skimp on the flashy leotards or retro exercises - in fact, each move in the clip is actually pulled from real 80's home workout videos - and the result is as colourful and lively as the track itself. Who would’ve thought post-punk and star-jumps would pair so well?”
- James Lynch, Trouble Juice

Hearts and Rockets’ frantic and paranoid post-punk number ‘You Don’t Know What You Have Until You’ve Had Enough’... It’s a track about needing to break free for one’s own sanity, where nights are spent sleepless and waking moments are imbued with animosity. Even though the song is only two-minutes long, Hearts and Rockets manage to succinctly convey the unhealthy aspects of remaining in a relationship where love has withered and died.”
- James Frostick, Weirdo Wasteland

“Picking up where their 2019 debut album Power left off, Hearts and Rockets’ contribution 'You Don’t Know What You Have Until You’ve Had Enough' finds our favourite synth-punk brats doing what they do best. Featuring their signature mish-mash of propulsive drum-machine grooves, grimy bass and erratic, minimalist guitar work, the track is as turbulent as it is animated. Where many of the highlights on Power featured call-and-response vocals between the duo’s Kalindy Williams and Kurt Eckardt, this time their gripping vocals snipe in unison, making the exasperated attitude of the track all the more rousing.” - James Lynch, Trouble Juice

“I think the band’s personal description of crafting ‘brat-wave’ is the most fitting genre, especially when you give this tune a spin; Kalindy has this sharp snarl that’s packed with attitude and energy…the sort Karen O brought to the table in the early YYYs EPs. It all feels like synth-y post-punk, with an execution that carries built in charm and hooks; I love the bass groove that operates as the track’s backbone.“
- Nathan Lankford, Austin Town Hall

“While the gritty bassline and pacing drum-machines appear to be dark, the empowered punk vocals and constant groove offer an illuminating message – a clarity and strength that comes with knowing you’re not alone.”
- Kylie O’Connell, Deafen County

“And what really works as well is just what the title promises - the power. Of course, if it were just power and attitude, it wouldn't be enough.  But Power has hooks and a consistently infectious groove underpinning every song.  Hearts and Rockets wades into your brain with an uncompromising swagger, and lives there for 14 tracks that will leave you breathless.”
- Scott, When You Motor Away

⭐⭐⭐⭐ “It's like Le Tigre got left out on the deck over a hot Australian summer. Love the spooky fun vibes.”
- Gen Fricker, triple j

Hearts and Rockets on TV:

“We’ve all been home a LOT during lockdown, and TV has been a saviour. ‘Square Eyes’ is about the fact that even when there is nothing on, there’s something on, and even when there’s nothing good to watch - TV’s got your back.

“It’s also about that nostalgic feeling of staying up late and sneaking some overnight TV in as a kid. We both have fond recollections of staying up late and watching rage and bad movies, and they’re some of our favourite memories.”
